The Grand Canyon Railway’s No. 29, a 2-8-0 SC-3 class locomotive built by ALCO in 1906, pulls into the Grand Canyon Station on Aug. 15, 2004. The locomotive hauled trains on the line from March 1990 through April 1995, when it was overhauled. It returned to service in the summer of 2004.

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. – The Santa Fe Railway began passenger service to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon on Sept. 17, 1901.

Passenger service continued until 1968. Twenty years later – on Sept. 17, 1989 – the Grand Canyon Railway started its service on the historic rail line between Williams, Ariz., and Grand Canyon National Park.

More than 181,000 passengers ride on the Grand Canyon Railway annually. The railroad keeps about 50,000 cars out of the national park on an annual basis.
